Mard (transl. 'Man') is a 1985 Indian Hindi-language action film directed by Manmohan Desai. Starring Amitabh Bachchan and Amrita Singh. The film was remade in Tamil as Maveeran. Amitabh Bachchan was nominated for a Filmfare Award in the category. Mard was the second highest-grossing film. of the year. and the eighth highest-grossing film of the 1980s (1980 to 1989). In addition, when adjusted for inflation, March is one of the highest-grossing films to release during the Diwali festival, at approximately over ₹450 crore nett. in today's time

The film opens in India. It is the beginning of the 20th century when India remains a part of the British Empire. The opening sequence depicts a group of British soldiers looting an Indian fort and its possessions taken by Hawaii England. They are stopped by the brave Raja Azad Singh (Dara Singh), who is extremely strong and manages to fly the light aircraft, subdue several English soldiers and recover the stolen jewels. Around this time, Rani Durga (Nirupa Roy), wife of Raja Azad Singh, gives birth to a baby boy, who is named Raju. The king carved the word marda (intended to convey strength and bravery) into the newborn's chest, noting that the baby was smiling the whole time, and apparently could feel no pain. (His words, mard ko dard nahi hota, meaning "a true man feels no pain", is a recurring dialogue throughout the film.) The British Commission conducts an investigation led by Lady Helena, a sympathetic and benevolent Englishwoman. ; The investigation reveals atrocities by the English soldiers and several officers are officially reprimanded. Lady Helena is a close confidant of Raja Azad Singh and is generally supportive of the king and the idea of India gaining independence from British rule.

British officers General Dyer (Kamal Kapoor) and Inspector Simon (Bob Christo) conspire with a whiny, weak-willed local doctor Harry (Prem Chopra) to capture Raja. Harry seduces the king; Thus weakened, the king is captured and imprisoned in a dungeon. Queen Durga escapes on Bahadur, the king's faithful horse. But he is shot, and Ghoda brings baby Raju to a local orphanage for safekeeping until Queen Durga recovers and retrieves him. A poor blacksmith's wife spots baby Raju in an orphanage, inquires about him, and eventually adopts him. When Queen Durga returns, she is shocked to find her child missing and he has lost the ability to speak. The penniless queen Durga eventually becomes a washerwoman. The traitorous Harry is appointed mayor of the town for his role in capturing the king.

Under the care of the loving blacksmith and his wife, Raju grows up to be a strong young man. His day job is to run a tonga. One day, he meets an arrogant and overbearing young woman who runs her car over an old lady. Raju gives chase, stops the young woman, and forces her to apologize to the old woman. The girl is of high descent, and her bodyguard Zybisko (Manik Irani) engages Raju, but Raju easily rescues her. The young woman turns out to be Ruby, the daughter of Mayor Harry. Ruby apologises. But she is mesmerized by Raju's rugged looks and candor. He initially rejects her advances to maintain his independence. But she eventually falls in love, has a change of heart and invites him to her birthday party.

Harry and General Dyer continue their relentless quest for power. Their first step is to demolish the basti (slum) in front of Harry's mansion. Raju unites the residents of the slum to protest the demolition team and stage a sit-in at Harry's mansion. Harry arrests Raju and is about to execute him when Lady Helena arrives on the scene. Lady Helena halts the demolition (citing a lack of documentation), reprimands Harry, and releases Raju. Harry tries to buy off Raju, but Raju douses the case with alcohol, sets it on fire, and uses the soot to blacken Harry's face. (No, it's definitely black money, because it burns black, he sees!) A despondent Harry tries to shoot him, but Ruby intervenes, professing her love for Tanga Wale. the tonga driver), and threatens to abandon her father altogether if any harm comes to her. Unable to subdue or remove Raju, a frustrated group of cronies (Harry, Dyer, Simon, and others) fret and fume.

The film introduces Danny (Dan Dhanoa), the son of General Dyer. Danny is every bit as corrupt, cunning and greedy as his father and his cronies. Danny runs nefarious operations beneath the clean, plush and manorial exterior of General Dyer and Mayor Harry. There are three such operations. First, a secret blood camp takes place; Residents of the settlement who are weak, aged or otherwise unfit are secretly abducted and their blood (all of it) involuntarily extracted to supply British war campaigns elsewhere. Second, there is a slave labor camp where, again, slum dwellers are put to work (without pay) on various civil and construction projects for the British Empire. And finally there is Raja Azad Singh, who is still imprisoned, and a champion for the slums and for the workers in the labor camps. His primary duty is to turn a giant flour mill by hand; This mill is the only source of food for the camps. (Queen Durga, it turns out, is a washerwoman in one of these camps.) The camps grow in size, and Raja Azad Singh secretly plans to revolt them; This becomes a growing concern for Harry.

Harry and General Dyer decide that the best way to get Raju out of the picture is to announce Ruby and Danny's engagement. Ruby strongly opposes this and elopes with Raju. Danny gives chase with his men, and also tries to kill Ruby, but eventually brings her back to Harry. Harry is really angry. He threatens to kill Ruby if she never disobeys him again. Danny hatches a nefarious plot to get rid of Raju.

As the first step in the plot, Danny captures the blacksmith, burns down his hut, kills his wife, and kills the blacksmith. Das puts in the camp. (As she dies, she tells Raju the story of her birth. Raju performs the last rites of his foster mother and writes a letter to his real mother, which he immerses in the river along with his foster mother's ashes. gives. The river takes him. Meditate on the camp where the blacksmith finds it and reads it to Queen Durga, who immediately remembers his story. The blacksmith stages a stick to facilitate his escape, and She is eventually reunited with Raju. The blacksmith, however, is killed.

Danny learns about Raju's lineage. Realizing that Raju will attack the camp to free Lohar and Raja Azad Singh, Danny takes the second step of his plot and sets a trap. Raju enters the dungeon to save his father. But it turns out that Raja Azad Singh has been replaced by a masked imposter (Simon), and Raju is captured.

At this point, Danny makes a fatal final move. He announces a gladiatorial sword fight between Raju and Raja Azad Singh, where the winner will go free. Before this fight, he steps in to make sure that father and son are indeed bloodthirsty for the other. Raja Azad Singh is brought to a blood camp where he witnesses Raju (actually a masked impostor) extracting blood from innocent civilians and swearing loyalty to the British; Raja is enraged and vows to eliminate him in the competition. Concurrently, Danny sends a message (via Ruby) that the fighter opposing Raju will be a masked impostor and not the real king. In return, Raju declares that he will not let his opponent leave the ring alive. And Danny immediately arranges for Raju to fight the real Raja.

The competition begins the next day, and father and son are soon in a mad sword fight. The duel takes a turn when Raja sees the word Mard on Raju's chest, and Raju sees blood trickle down Raja's cheek from one of his blows. They quickly discover the truth and maintain the appearance of a duel to the death until Raja hoists Raju from the arena and into the viewing gallery. Raju thrusts his sword into General Dyer's body, killing him instantly.

Danny is distraught. He orders his tanks to eliminate Raju and Raja. (Lady Helena and Rani Durga are tied to the tanks, with British soldiers holding them at gunpoint.) Raju and Raja grab the horses and give a rapid chase with the tanks. After a long chase and fight, Raju and Raja overpower the tanks, rescue the women and fight the baddies. After a fierce sword and gun fight, Harry, Danny and Goga drown in the swamp, and Raju and his father return victorious.

The film follows the coming together of Raju and Ruby and the beginning of India's independence movement The episode ends with Raju being reunited with his real parents.
